Don’t let summer’s last hurrah become your first DUI

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2024 | Criminal Defense |

Labor Day will soon be here. Even though warm weather will continue to linger for several weeks, the holiday weekend seems to signal the end of summer fun.

This is when many families try to squeeze in those last cookouts and gatherings that last into the evening hours. Good food and time with friends are sometimes accompanied by a few alcoholic beverages. However, you don’t want your summer to end with a DUI.

Mississippi doesn’t mess around

The consequences for a first DUI offense are pretty severe, and may include:

  • Fines ranging from $250 to $1,000
  • Up to 48 hours in jail
  • Mandatory attendance and completion of the Mississippi Alcohol Safety Education Program (MASEP)
  • 120-day license suspension
  • The installation of an ignition interlock device
  • Community service

Considering the ramifications of a first DUI, it’s crucial to have a plan in place before heading out. If you plan to enjoy alcoholic beverages, make arrangements for a safe ride home beforehand. Designate a sober driver, use rideshare services or take public transportation to ensure you get home safely.

Before you start drinking, decide on a limit and stick to it. This can help you maintain control and avoid excessive consumption that can impair your ability to make smart decisions. During holiday weekends, including Labor Day, law enforcement agencies increase their presence and set up checkpoints to catch impaired drivers.

If you are the party’s host, ensure your guests have plenty of non-alcoholic drink options and encourage them to arrange transportation in advance. If possible, consider allowing them to stay over in your home.

You want to remember your summer for its fun times, great friends and good laughs. The best celebrations are the ones where everyone arrives home safely.
