What To Expect At Family Court
For most people, the thought of going to court is extremely stressful. At The Maggio Law Firm, PC, we believe that much of that stress can be relieved through education and preparation. When a trip to family court is necessary, we make certain that our clients know what to expect.
It is important to understand that not all divorce and family law cases need to go to court. Many are resolved out of court through negotiation or alternative dispute resolution techniques such as mediation. Our attorneys will take great care to find the most appropriate path toward a resolution in your case. If court is necessary, we will make certain that all of your questions about the process are answered ahead of time.
Thorough Preparation Is Crucial
“Will I have to talk?” “What will I say?” “What will the other parties say?”
These are some of the most common questions that people ask our lawyers before a family court appearance. We will tell you whether you will have to talk. We will make recommendations about what you should say, even practicing if it will make you more comfortable. Always speak professionally, addressing the judge as “your honor,” “sir” or “ma’am.” While we cannot predict what the other parties or their lawyers will say, our experience means we are skilled at assessing how our opponents may approach cases.
What you say in court is important, but so is how you dress and how you act. We recommend that you dress professionally. Wear the clothes you might wear to an important job interview. We recommend against dressing casually. When you get to court, turn off your phone. Do not bring food or beverages into the courtroom. Do not have side conversations. Focus your attention on the courtroom proceedings.
Where Is The Family Court?
There is no dedicated family court in Mississippi. Divorce and family law cases are handled in chancery court. Gulfport is located in the eighth chancery court district and cases are handled in chancery court in the Harris County Courthouse. We will let you know ahead of time specifically where and when your court appearance is.
